HORROR SUB GENRES

BODY HORROR:

Body Horror involves a biological element. It centres on a distortion or violation to the human body; be it through mutation, mutilation or a brutality of violent measures.

COMEDY HORROR:

Comedy Horror comprises of elements that blend the typical horror constructs with humour. They often parody or spoof the archetypical themes of horror while containing the fundamentals of the genre.

FOUND FOOTAGE:

Found Footage horror depicts the film the viewer is watching as a discovery and presented to an audience with documentary style nuances.

GORE:

Gore horror is a sub genre that uses extreme and graphic violence to exacerbate the vulnerability of the human body. Gore is also known as Splatter Horror.

MONSTER HORROR:

Monster Horror is fairly self explanatory. It features a “creature” or giant sized being/s antagonizing and terrorizing the protagonist and often, the human race.

PARANORMAL HORROR:

Paranormal or Supernatural Horror features malevolent and metaphysical entities. Haunted dwellings and abandoned institutions are often a key element, and are often personified as an integral character.

PSYCHOLOGICAL HORROR:

Psychological Horror aims to create discomfort and fear for the viewer by evoking and exploiting the same tensions onscreen for the characters. Playing on human vulnerability by executing a sense of paranoia is a major component.

SLASHER:

The Slasher genre spotlights a serial killer or killers who target mass victims, often a group or collective of associated casualties. The body count is usually sizeable and the carnage is always extreme.
